Final Days Review - Stretch Goals

Greetings Gravediggers,

We're in the final DAY countdown for They Came from Beyond the Grave! on Kickstarter - it ends on Thursday, August 20th at 2:00 PM EDT - there's a tiny tiny amount of time to recruit additional backers, but that finish line is approaching fast! With that in mind, I've touched on some of the basics over the past few days to make sure that everyone has all of the information they need to support the project in the way that works best for them.

Whether you're just spending a single night in a haunted manor or tracking down a vampire to finally end his terrible legacy, these are good items to review to make sure that we all end up where we want to be.

Refresher Course

We've had, and will have, a lot of new backers join in during these last days. I want to take a moment to highlight some key Update posts that new backers may want to check out (and existing backers may want to read as a refresher!).

MANUSCRIPT PREVIEW - As noted, the complete Preview Manuscript is available for you to review prior to the conclusion of the campaign. If you're a backer, you'll have access to this preview manuscript after the campaign. Remember, though, there are still some minor edits, development and proofing that need to be done. But, you can consider this about 96.8% finished. Making the manuscript available for review before the campaign ends ensures that everyone know exactly what our goal is - making this book - and are on board with our aims for this project. Thanks for your support, we're all in this together!

August 15 update - REWARD TIERS - your best starting point for figuring out which Backer Reward Level to choose to help support this project.

August 16 update - ADD ON REWARDS - the important companion piece to the Reward Tiers topic, including information on how to increase your pledge amount to maybe add the Director's Screen or maybe They Came from Beneath the Sea! to your list of rewards.

If you've been looking at the Premium Reward Tiers - the expensive ones that offer a bit more interaction with the setting, system, and design team - there's always some churn near the end so some rewards that were completely claimed may become available again before the end.

Choosing the correct Reward Tier for your desired rewards, and then filling in any "gaps" with add-ons, ensures that you'll be claiming all of your desired rewards as a thank you for supporting this project and bringing this world to life.

Remember, your TOTAL PLEDGE AMOUNT is equal to your REWARD TIER + SHIPPING + ADD ONS. And we will confirm your Add On selection with our post-campaign pledge manager, Backerkit, a few weeks after the campaign ends.

On Thursday, I'll be posting one further "Final Day" update, covering What Happens Next and outlining what to expect once the campaign ends.

But until then, we're going to hopefully summon forth a final Stretch Goal achievement (or two!) as we race through our final day of the campaign!

There's obviously a lot going on in the world right now - a lot of uncertainty and unknowns - but it's been really great to see the community come together to support this project and turn it into a big success. My first job was working in a video store (when they had those, a million years ago) and I've been involved in the world of watching classic cinema in one form or another over the past few decades, so I'm always up to sit around and talk movies. This game was like all of my favorite things all at the same time!

Welcome to the final hours of this campaign. What an amazing ride this project has been! These past 30 days have been fantastic, starting with a great first day and continuing that enthusiasm and excitement right up until the end. We gained backers and support throughout every step of the campaign, and the fun community building up around this game is awesome.

As I fight with Kickstarter's formatting limitations and prepare to post this, we are just about FIVE HOURS from the end of this campaign, and approaching an amazing finish!

Shipping is calculated automatically by Kickstarter, based on your location. Add On rewards will be selected in the post-campaign pledge manager sent out once payment processing is complete.

SO: Ensure that you've selected the Reward Tier you want, and included funding for any Add Ons you wish to include. AND - make sure that you are comfortable with the Pledge Total amount, in terms of it covering everything you want and its' affordability.

I'm going to speak against my own self interest for a moment, and repeat myself one last time - the world has become a bit more unpredictable and some futures are a little less certain. Ensure that your circumstances enable to afford this pledge at this moment - Kickstarter will begin processing payments after the campaign ends and neither Onyx Path nor I have any involvement in that process. If you are unsure of your financial situation but don't want to miss out, please pledge for a tier you can afford now and know that you will likely be able to upgrade to open pledge levels in our post-campaign Pledge Manager for some time before the book is completed.

2. PAYMENT AND CONTACT INFORMATION

Once you're comfortable with your pledge, please ensure that the payment and contact information in your kickstarter account is up to date and correct. Making sure your e-mail is entered correctly and your credit card isn't expired will speed up the next step process. (I have learned from experience!)

WHAT COMES NEXT?

3. AFTER THE CAMPAIGN ENDS

First, we celebrate. Kickstarter will send out a "Hooray!" email confirming the campaign ended with final totals. We'll give high fives and fist bumps in the comments section.

Then, the Kickstarter payment process begins. Over the next week, kickstarter will begin charging your payment methods for the total amount you've pledged.

If there is an issue with your payment method (expired credit card or incorrect number or pre-paid Visa awaiting funds, for example), Kickstarter will keep trying to process payment during this time.

Once this step is done, which will likely be early September, Kickstarter will confirm everything with Onyx Path and I can begin to set up the project with BackerKit and link it to the Kickstarter data.

BackerKit is a robust fulfillment integration and pledge management program that will allow us to work with all of the data and distribute the rewards to you. It will take me a few weeks to set the project up. Once I've got it all entered and built, the team from BackerKit will review to ensure I didn't mess anything up too badly, and then I'll make any changes they've suggested and we can move on to the Survey stage.

4. BACKERKIT SURVEYS

Once BackerKit says I'm good to go, I will send out a survey to all backers. This is why confirming your e-mail is important!

The BackerKit survey is both a verb and a noun - it will collect data for the analysis of some aspect of a group (enabling Onyx Path to set print runs, prioritize new projects, and fine-tune future kickstarters), as well as providing a general review or summary of the reward tier you've chosen, confirm all of the rewards associated with that reward tier, and confirm your total pledge amount.

I expect Surveys to go out by late September. If you opted to include any Add-On rewards to your pledge, this is the point where you will select them. BackerKit will deduct the cost of your reward tier (+shipping) from your total pledge and show you how much you have to allocate for add-on purchases. You simply select the ones you want and proceed. From that point forward, those add-ons will be included in your list of rewards.

During the Survey period, you can also also choose to increase your reward tier. If you've gone back to work or found an alternate income source and decide it's time to trade up to get two copies of the book or include another add-on, you can do so at this time. Note, you will not be able to reduce your reward tier selection, only increase.

If there was an issue with payment to Kickstarter, you should also be able to address that at this point in the process.

The survey will ask you to confirm your shipping address, even though it'll be some time before we ship out the final product. Do not worry about moving before shipping begins - you will be able to update BackerKit right up until the point that we begin fulfilling the final book. We will send out a notice prior to lock down so you can update any information.

I'll also use the Survey to confirm some details for the limited and premium reward tiers.

5. REWARD DISTRIBUTION

This is a long process, but I will send out regular updates (usually at the end of the month) to keep you up to speed on our progress. There will be strings of updates that are just "still working on it," but I will share new artwork or information when I can.

Eventually, we will have a completed PDF of They Came from Beyond the Grave! We'll take some time to distribute, review, and compile any errata or corrections that need to be made. When we've made any necessary changes, we'll send out updated copy of the PDFs and then begin creating print-ready files for the Print-on-Demand and hardcover version.

It's yet another long process ahead, but one that we wouldn't be on if not for your faith and support.

With that in mind, I wanted to touch on some of the basics over the next 4 days to make sure that everyone has all of the information they need to support the project in the way that works best for them.

Today, I am going to talk about ADD ON reward options. On Thursday, before the campaign finishes I will post an update with a Final Checklist & What Comes Next.

First Step: Reward Tier

The absolute best way to ensure that you're getting all of the available rewards you want from this kickstarter is to ensure you've selected the appropriate Backer Reward Tier, as detailed in our Reward Tier Update. Selecting the right Reward Tier covers about 95% of the options available to you. If you want the PDF only, make sure you've selected the correct reward. If you want the hardcover version, double-check your reward tier to ensure it's featured. If your going digital now but want the option of getting a discounted Print-on-Demand copy later, make sure you've got a reward tier that includes it.

Once you've completed that important step, you're going to want to look at the Add On rewards for any reward "bits" that don't automatically fall into your reward tier. That takes us to the Add On step.

Step Two: Add-Ons.

If you've selected one of the "core" Reward Tiers, you've likely already included most of the rewards you want. In addition to the rewards offered as part of the Reward Tier configurations, there are a few other possible rewards you may wish to add. All Add-On rewards will be described below.

Each add on includes an extra amount to add on to your total pledge amount. Remember that your total pledge amount includes all shipping charges and not just your reward tier level.

Using myself as an example, my Keeper of the Karstein Manor Reward Tier is a $55 pledge, and since I live in Canada, Kickstarter automatically adds on an additional +$45 to cover shipping.

One of my friends in my regular gaming group has been paying close attention to this campaign, but hadn't yet jumped on, so we've decided to go in together and double up our pledge and save a little bit on a single shipment. With that in mind, it's time to check that I've got the most appropriate pledge.

The first step is to change my pledge to the correct reward tier. On my PC, the button I'm looking for is this one:

On the mobile app, it's a little sleeker:

And that brings up my current Pledge Tier reward choice and allows me to investigate my options.

So, it's time to CHANGE MY PLEDGE. On my PC, I select the Change Your Pledge button, while in the mobile app you select the three little dots in the top corner to present options.

I can scroll down or read the kickstarter rewards page to review the list of rewards with my Tier. I've decided to get two copies of the hardcover They Came from Beyond the Grave! book. Reviewing the Reward Tier chart, I see that the Evil Twins tier includes 2 copies, so that's what I'd like instead.

Once I've selected this reward, it displays the Total Pledge Amount before confirming.

So, my Total includes my Pledge Amount for my reward tier (the minimum is $100 that covers the Evil Twins reward tier) plus shipping if required (+$45 in this case).

Before I hit confirm, though, I know that there's one more change I want to make. I backed They Came from Beneath the Sea!, a related Onyx Path game, and got the Director's Screen add on for that one, so I want to get the screen again this time. I've also decided to add on Quip Deck for this game and have it included in my rewards shipment. That's going to be a big box of excitement when it arrives!

The Director's Screen is a +$20 Add On reward, and the Quip Deck is a +$20 Add On reward, so I'll need to add an additional +$40 to my total to cover those Add On options.

So, I've selected the Reward Tier that works best for me - Evil Twins - which includes

•  They Came from Beyond the Grave! RPG PDF (x2 redemptions)
•  They Came from Beyond the Grave! Quip Cards PDF (x2 redemptions)
•  They Came from Beyond the Grave! RPG Hardcover (x 2 copies!)
•  They Came from Beyond the Grave! Print-on-Demand Option
•  They Came from Beyond the Grave! Quip Cards Print-on-Demand Option
• Full Access to the Pledge Manager

And then I adjust my total pledge amount to include additional funding to cover my Add On options:

• They Came from Beyond the Grave! Director's Screen +$20
•  They Came from Beyond the Grave! Quip Card Deck +$20

And, since I'm pledging for physical rewards, Kickstarter adds automatic shipping charges for Canada

•  Shipping to Canada +$45 

My total Pledge Amount is $185. Note that this is in US dollars (you can see it's about $245 Canadian, but the final exchange rate will depend on when the payment is processed once we conclude the campaign).

When I've got everything accounted for, I hit continue for one last review.

If it looks good, I click Confirm (or Updated Pledge or Continue, depending on your browser and interface).

It's important to note that there is NO PLACE in your kickstarter reward tier pledge to indicate which add-ons you wish to include, or give any reason why you are adjusting your pledge to a new amount. You aren't adding items to a shopping cart in this scenario - instead, you're adding pledge dollars that you will assign once the campaign ends. With this in mind, you may want to make a note of which add-on items and the associated add-on dollar amounts you've included if you're forgetful like I am.

About a month after the campaign has ended and Kickstarter has processed your payment, I will send out a survey via Backerkit - a complex system of tools used to manage the back-end of the kickstarter fulfillment process. When you receive the survey, you will confirm your Backer Reward Tier and assign your pledged dollars to any add-on items that you wish to include. I'll repeat and expand on this information in an upcoming post about "What Happens Next?" in Thursday's update.

DIGITAL REWARDS

In addition to the rewards listed in each Reward Tier, backers can increase their overall pledge to add on the following additional rewards. Simply increase your total pledge amount by the value indicated – we will confirm which add on rewards you’ve chosen via BackerKit surveys after the campaign has run (we'll talk about that more on Thursday, before the campaign ends).

Add an extra activation of your PDF download link for They Came from Beyond the Grave! Can be added to any reward tier that already contains a PDF copy as part of the rewards list.

THEY CAME FROM BENEATH THE SEA! is a companion game, also powered by Onyx Path's Storypath system, and includes all the rules you need to play as a two-fisted hero dealing with alien threats, including rules for creating characters with a mix of Origins to customize your Archetype. It has ready-to-play scenarios, along with information on events of the 1950s that you can incorporate into your game with a new fishy taste. For +$20, you can add on the PDF rulebook as well as the Print-and-Play PDF for the They Came from Beneath the Sea! Quip Cards.

 PHYSICAL REWARDS 

All physical items that will require shipping (additional books, director screen) can only be added to reward tiers that already include a hardcover copy of They Came from Beyond the Grave! (Reward Tiers of $55+). Your rewards will be sent in a single shipment when the book becomes available.

REWARD DELIVERY

About a month after the campaign has ended, I'll launch our post-campaign Pledge Manager to collect information from all backers and confirm which rewards you'll be receiving. At this point, you'll also confirm which Add On Rewards you've paid for. Once we have that information, I'll be able to deliver the one reward that's currently available - the They Came from Beneath the Sea! PDF Add On option by sending special redemption links to claim your digital rewards from our partners at DriveThruRPG.com. Clicking these redemption links will allow you to add these PDF titles to your digital library to download anytime.

So, while it will take some time for They Came from Beyond the Grave!  to move from it's manuscript form to a final product, you won't be waiting a year for PDFs that comes from Beneath the Sea!. (You'll be waiting about 6 weeks or so, just enough time for us to set up the reward infrastructure.)

Physical Books

It's going to take some time to create the PDF for They Came from Beyond the Grave! and even longer for the eventual print run. When the book is at the printer, I will be in touch with all kickstarter backers and go over lockdown procedures and confirming addresses one final time.

Don't fret if you had forgotten to increase your pledge amount to cover an Add On by the end of the campaign. These Add Ons will be available to select in our post-campaign Pledge Manager for those who participated in our campaign and have full access to the Pledge Manager. So, if you are undecided at this time, you will be able to hold off until we're closer to the final reward shipment goes out.

Add Ons AFTER Reward Tiers

Again, your first step should always be choosing the proper reward tier. If I had simply added a second copy of the hardcover to my initial Keeper of Karstein Manor pledge, I'd have paid more and received fewer rewards. So, please review your reward pledge tier first and then proceed to add on top of that.

It probably goes without saying that all funds are expressed in US Dollars, although Kickstarter displays the approximate conversion rate.

It Adds Up!

That should explain the process of Selecting your Reward Tier and increasing your TOTAL PLEDGE AMOUNT to account for any additional rewards you wish to receive. Since increasing your pledge amount increases the overall funding level of the project, add-ons can help us achieve our funding target, so it benefits us all to suggest that you double-check to make sure you're getting all of the rewards you want.

Additionally, this may go without saying, please review your personal budget and ensure you've selected the appropriate reward tier and add ons for your current financial situation. Kickstarter will begin charging your payment method once the campaign ends, so ensure you've budgeted correctly.

Conclusion

As we move through these final days of the campaign, please ensure you've chosen the correct Reward Tier for the rewards you want. And beyond that - please make sure you've adjusted your TOTAL PLEDGE AMOUNT to include the additional funds that will cover any add-ons you wish to receive.

On Thursday, just before the campaign ends, I will send an update detailing the steps that occur after the campaign concludes, including how and when to confirm your add-on rewards.
